The title originally released on July 27, 2010, and since then has seen multiple milestones that have kept the Terran, Zerg, and Protoss all eagerly murdering each other across bizarre arcade game modes, a cooperative campaign with multiple commanders that brought new styles of play, a heavily contested ladder, and even the arrival of Starcraft 2 going free to play to help support a flagging player base. ![]() After slightly over a full decade where Blizzard has continued to craft new mechanics and game modes, the studio has announced yesterday that Starcraft 2 is officially going into maintenance mode. Blizzard has been exceptionally silent in general for a long while now. The same goes for the full release of Diablo Immortal, now in alpha, Diablo 4 or Overwatch 2. Like with all Blizzard projects, we currently have no timeline for the Diablo 2 remake’s arrival, which VV has already been working on for some time. As for how Vicarious Visions is feeling about this, we have no idea, as the developer has not tweeted since the news was first reported in yesterday. Though with how hollowed-out Blizzard has seemed to be lately, perhaps this is the emergency blood infusion they need. But I think the main point is that after all the work Vicarious Visions has done for Activision over the years, they deserved better than to be a perma-Blizzard support studio and probably should have been given entire projects and IPs to themselves. ![]()
